VOVCOF Projects

Food Support for Orphans & Vulnerable Children (OVCs) in Vuvulane

Our biggest priority is child nutrition, making sure that no child goes to bed hungry. The well equipped soup kitchen provides weekly nutritious meals. We have an organic vegetable garden which provides fresh vegetables.

Low-Cost, High-Quality Eco-Housing Initiative

The aim of this project is to provide low-cost, high-quality, eco-housing for the community of Mgidza in Vuvulane, eSwatini. The foundational principle behind this project is the conviction that every child deserves a beautiful and safe home.

The children of Mgidza, Vuvulane, are faced with harsh life realities. Through the unfortunate circumstances that they were born into a situation of poverty whereby their basic human rights are compromised: limited food, shelter, health, education, and clothing. Most of the children and their families, at Mgidza, do not have adequate homes: homes that are safe, healthy, and beautiful. The high unemployment rate, amongst the youth, also hinders the development of Vuvulane, thus perpetuating petty crime, alcohol abuse, sexual harassment, and domestic violence.

The low-cost eco-housing sanctuary can be a critical anchor in a tumultuous world as the child navigates the world to find their path to success.

Child Literacy

Key figure: VOVCOF has donated 238 books to children in the Vuvulane area.

Every child in Vuvulane must be literate. We encourage and support education in our community by working closely with early childhood development practitioners and primary schools.

Vuvulane does not have a library thus we are hoping to develop one so we can foster the love of reading and access to written knowledge.

COVID-19 Response

Key figure: VOVCOF has served 4,256 meals since March 2020 when Eswatini marshaled its COVID-19 response and subsequent lockdown.

COVID-19 had a huge negative impact on the Vuvulane community. Luckily, we have not recorded any major cases, thus we are currently COVID-19 free, as a community. The pandemic made us spring into action and put even more emphasis on providing food not only for the children but their parents as well. With no ability to go to work and schools shut, food had to take centre stage to avoid a major hunger catastrophe.

The COVID-19 response drive that VOVCOF undertook allowed for the provision of thousands of meals, family food hampers, the implementation of backyard organic gardens, and an organic chicken rearing business.

Sustainability

Sustainability in our general operations is key to our future. Environmental sustainability is also a major driver in how we carry out our daily practices and any new projects.

Projects such as the public solar cellphone charger, rainwater collection facilities, organic vegetable gardens, and the low-cost eco-housing project are a testament to our commitment to protecting the environment and living healthier lives.
